Admittedly, I have had a Twitter account since about 8th grade and I have used it for mainly entertainment and to share funny things with friends. Before this class, I had never seen Twitter as an educational tool or as an aid for teachers to network and grow. Since creating my EME 2040 Student Account, I have learned how to use Twitter to my advantage and in a constructive way to grow in education. I have interacted with a couple of the other students in class and I have also interacted with larger educational accounts such as @LeonSchools @eme2040 and @TED_ED. I think that it is incredibly beneficial to interact with other likeminded students, as well as large company or organization accounts just to be in the conversation and a part of the community. It is also good for seeing changes in the teaching/learning community and getting help from others. I am sure that I will use twitter with students in the future. I can see myself making a twitter account especially for my classes where I will post and remind about homework assignments or big projects or deadlines. I will also use it to communicate with my students in a public but safe space.
The digital divide is a term used to describe the separation between people do have access to technology and people who do not. This term is mostly used during talks about education and the disparity between having and not having those resources to better achieve goals. This is something that can affect students in a very negative way also. This difference in resources can become very clear to students as a difference in advantages that they have. This can cause a divide in the classroom. Probably the biggest cause of the digital divide is access. Many people have no access to technology because of financial issues, access for people with disabilities, and lack of information or help. I am hoping that I will have access to technology in the school I will work in. I will, however make sure to be accommodating to whichever students may not have access to technology outside of school. For example, I will accept a handwritten essay instead of a printed essay if I know that that student will have an issue typing or printing it.
As a hopeful English Creative Writing Teacher, I am hoping to have a lot of collaborative and creative assignments centered around writing. One software tool that is extremely helpful with writing and collaboration is Google Docs. You can use it as a regular writing document or you can share it with peers so that multiple people can collaborate on one document without being together. This is useful for group assignments where the students will need to do work outside of the classroom. Another software that I will be implementing is Kahoot! This is a software tool that I used in high school and I found it to be very helpful! It is perfect for a little quiz or study practice. Kahoot is basically a mobile game show online to help students study using content that the teacher has created! Great for studying for an upcoming exam!
